Quick Summary & Key Takeaways

Learn how drawdown types work, the main differences, and how they affect your trading strategy and challenge success. Always test your numbers in our live calculators below to ensure stop loss distance and maximum drawdown buffer remain compliant.

The Three Types of Prop Firm Drawdown

Not all drawdowns are equal. Two prop firms may advertise a "10% maximum drawdown," but the mechanics of how that drawdown is tracked will dramatically alter your probability of passing.

1. Static Drawdown: Fixed permanently at your initial account size minus max loss. If you start with $100,000 and have a 10% limit, your breach floor is permanently $90,000. If your account grows to $110,000, your buffer expands to $20,000.

2. End-of-Day (EOD) Trailing: The floor updates only after the market closes at 5:00 PM EST. Intraday equity fluctuations do not ratchet the floor higher.

3. Intraday Trailing Equity (High Risk): The floor follows your highest unrealized tick profit in real time. If a trade surges up +$3,000 and pulls back to +$1,000, your floor stays anchored to the +$3,000 peak, cutting your cushion by $2,000.

The Intraday Trailing Trap

Firms with intraday trailing equity have significantly higher failure rates. A standard market retracement on a winning trade can liquidate your account even if the trade was closed in profit.

How to Protect Your Buffer

Always monitor your Effective Floor — the higher of your Maximum Drawdown floor and your Daily Loss floor. Use our Prop Firm Drawdown Calculator daily before entering your first position.

Determine your effective loss floor by taking the higher of your maximum drawdown floor (account size minus max loss%) and your daily loss floor (start-of-day balance minus daily loss%). Buffer is current balance minus this effective floor.
